How do minor scales work?

I can play all the minor scales but I'm having trouble memorizing them, the 12 major scales were easy to memorize because they followed the pattern of root, whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step. Is their a similar pattern for minor scales if so what is it? Also, whats the difference between melodic minors and harmonic minors?
