Why is it that so many countries criticize right-wing politics in the U.S., & then elect right-wingers @ home?

I am no fan of GW Bush, but why can't people see that it's just a matter of degree with right-wing politicians? People point fingers at right wing politics in America, then elect right wing politicians at home. Sarkoszy in France, Berlusconi in Italy, Harper in Canada, look around the world and you'll see right wing politicians being elected. Why is this?
