Why do christians promote love, tolerance and forgiveness?

I don't know any devout christian who doesn't put aside their own pride to listen to someone with a problem. They all would help with money or donations in a heartbeat. I haven't observed a single one who went on a crusade of blood and terror recently. More often they are the ones that you know that will bring you groceries if your family has fallen on hard times. I've also never had one force myself or anybody else into church at gunpoint.
