Why did the Confederacy lose the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War?

I'm writing a research paper on this question and I'm trying to make a case for several command failures. I don't know the reasons why, however, those failures occurred. Anyone have any insight? Several of the mistakes the Confederates made there were very out of character for them.
